World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener laid the first ceremonial stone at the construction site for the World Archery Excellence Centre today, alongside International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and representatives from federal, cantonal and city authorities.
“This is a historic moment for our great sport,” said Prof Dr Erdener. “We are very grateful for everyone’s support in this project, fundamental to our vision for the future of archery.”
“Over the last few years we have seen a dramatic increase in participation and global recognition in our sport,” he continued. “There is still much work to do and as an organisation and a sport we constantly aim to innovate and evolve. Vital to this mission is the World Archery Excellence Centre: a hub, cornerstone and a state-of-the-art example to the worldwide archery community.”
The International Olympic Committee President has been a staunch supporter of the project, which will see archery become the first Olympic sport to have a dedicated training facility in the Olympic Capital.
“Archery is one of the most ancient sports, but it has also been an innovator throughout its history and that is shown here at this centre once more,” he said.
The World Archery Excellence Centre is expected to open in late 2016.
